Top 10 Passwords

2007-04-28

In the 5/8 issue of PC Magazine they list the Top 10 Passwords:

1.   password
2.   123456
3.   qwerty (sequence of letters on keyboard)
4.   ABC123
5.   letmein (I think this is very funny.)
6.   monkey
7.   myspace1
8.   password1
9.   blink182 (a popular group goes to a popular password by fans)
10. Your first name

So this is why we see on TV people using other's computers and breaking into them quickly because they must be using one of the passwords on this list.

I just noticed that Doe had the top five passwords on her blog with a very cool link with a password security checker on it so go visit her post.

Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah (show synopsis)

2007-04-27

The wonderful Doctor Oz on Oprah 4/26 was answering viewers questions and concerns.

Here is a show synopsis of what was covered on this airing.

If you are looking for something specific, on your tool bar, click edit then find on this page.
Type in the box, then click find.  The word you are looking for should be highlighted.

1. Is it dangerous to hold in gas?  Everyone holds about 1 liter of gas and releases some 14 times a day (on average).  You can hold it in, but it builds up and you can get cramping.

2. Why do people get constipated when travelling?  "Safe toilet Syndrome" (for real), when we leave our comfort zone, we are not relaxed.  Also, when travelling, people don't get enough fiber or water.  If you are travelling out of your time zone, then your body clock is off also.
Chronic constipation can be a sign of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or cancer.  Get checked if you have a major change for a time.

3. Is it possible that I am allergic to my husband's sperm?  I get numb, red, and irritated.
Dr. Oz explained that it is the protein that may cause the allergy so use a condom.
He also said that it could also be a low grade infection too.
For some woman, their antibodies react to the sperm invaders as if they were bacteria.  He said this is sometimes the reason why some woman cannot get pregnant so look into this possibility if you are having trouble conceiving.

4. A woman complained that her massages wear off fast.  She was considering "rolfing", and was it longer lasting than a massage.
Dr. Oz explained that rolfing is a type of massage that releases the joints and helps you stand upright.  It is like a massage only deep pressure is applied to stimulate lymphatics and releases oxytoxins.  It is common to have this sort of treatment after accidents or surgery.
Dr. Oz took his shirt off (yes he was shirtless on Oprah's stage and on National TV) and then had a Rolfing expert demo on him. Rolfing is a good idea for anyone at anytime.

nose bidet

5. Netipot/Nettipot/Neti Pot or a Nose Bidet can be found in health food stores or drug stores (pictured above).
They are good for chronic allergy sufferers, or people with sinus problems.
You use a saline solution, pour it into your nose while tipping your head sideways and flush out the gunk. Do each side/nasal passage. Doctors say that this is better treatment (on a regular basis) than taking antibiotics for sinus infections. Regular treatments (common in other parts of the world) will lessen infections.

6. A woman asked why she had belly button liquid with a strange odor.  She said she cleaned her belly button out with rubbing alcohol but she still had it.
Dr. Oz said that she may have a cyst if it is white and creamy.  He said you should never clean out something with anything you would not put on or in your eyes.

7. Is is safe to listen to loud music wearing ear buds?
One hour of loud noise is enough. Volume should only be 70% high.
Loud music wears down your ears by shaking up the bones and wearing out the little hairs.  This is what leads to hearing loss.

Dr. Oz mentioned a German study that woman exposed to loud noise at work or home had a 50% higher chance of having a heart attack.

8. Room mates complained about a roomies very stinky feet and what could be done about it.
Dr. Oz mentioned that there are a quarter million sweat glands in the feet alone that produce a half liter of sweat a day.  Sometimes the odor is caused by bacteria or fungus.
He recommended a home remedy for stinky feet by soaking feet in cold tea every day for a week.

9. Can cell phone use cause brain cancer or radiation poisoning?
Possibly but there are no studies at this time.  Put your phone on speaker phone or use a land line if the possibility concerns you.

10. Another woman mentioned profuse sweating that she had to frequently shower and change her clothing.
Sweating is the body getting rid of toxins.
Have your thyroid tested, it is a simple blood test that goes out one day and comes back the next.
It could also be a sign of disease so see your doctor.
Heart disease is one, in particular high blood pressure.  Average blood pressure numbers: 130/85 and Optimal is 115/75.

Mention was made of Dr. Oz's book: You on a Diet and his XM Satellite Radio Show.

Dr. Phil: Interfering In Laws

2007-04-26

WOW! Wednesday's Show 4/25.

Poor Amanda the wife!

Her husband's (Pierre) mother controls and manipulates him as if she owns him.
Mother pays the mortgage on the house they live in and visits to "house check" once a week with out notification, just drop in and criticize.
Mother also bought him a fancy car.
Mother complains about the cost of the house.

When asked if he had to choose between his wife and mother, he says it is a hard choice because he cannot give up his lifestyle or car. Dr. Phil said maybe he should not be married if he was depending on his Mom for financial support.

Pierre is 38 years old and has a good job.  Amanda, his wife seemed considerably younger.
I do not recall how long or if it was even mentioned how long they have been married.

Mother has a very negative attitude toward Amanda and thinks Pierre should divorce her because there are better educated woman around for him.
Pierre says Mother never liked any of his girlfriends.

Mother says Amanda has a drinking problem.  Amanda admits she does and the stress MIL is causing is part of the problem.

Mother and Pierre speak French when Amanda is around and Amanda does not speak or understand French but felt like Mother was talking about her.

As an experiment, Dr. Phil treated them to dinner and had Amanda wired so that an interpreter was telling Amanda what her husband and MIL were talking about.  Amanda was right, MIL was trash talking about her.

Mother said that she is a psychologist and an expert at evaluating Amanda and her problems.
What? and she cannot control herself and steps over boundaries with all this verbal, emotional, mental and psychological abuse?

I hope Pierre is smart and gives the car and the house back to his mother.
Pierre and Amanda should buy their own house and car.
This would prevent Mother from dropping in frequently and claiming ownership.

Mother should mind her own business.  If Pierre is happy with his life, let him be and be happy for him.
Don't think you (Mother) can sleep in the same bed with them just because you buy or provide big ticket items to claim ownership of your son and his life.
Call before you visit -- don't drop in unexpectedly.
Don't belittle your son or his wife. Keep your mouth shut and let them solve their own problems.

Mother was very annoying and evidently has nothing better to do than focus on her son's marriage and wife.
She needs to grow up and play nice in the sandbox.

No mention was made about Mother's marital status, no mention of a husband or his whereabouts.

Dr. Phil offered Amanda help to restore her sense of self esteem and her drinking problem.  She accepted.

The second couple on the show needed lots of counselling before they even get engaged.
Too much anger, fighting, and disrespectful behavior that could lead to a very volatile and abusive relationship.  Good luck to them.

The Pokemon Challenge

2007-04-24

I have lots of Moms who read this blog. This is some information for those who will be carting their kids around to Pokemon events.  This is my experience and maybe you can take something away or think outside the box making your own plans.

Last spring, my daughter qualified to be in the 10th anniversary National Pokemon Challenge.
We downloaded papers and waited till July for her to participate.
She went on a Pokemon Forum and listened to others tell of their experience so we could have an idea what to expect.  My daughter is very trustworthy and naturally, we went by what others were reporting from the other events in other cities.  I completely forgot that most of the comments were by kids not parents, so here is my take.

-- We had to travel to the big city for this event, a two and a half hour drive for us.
Weather -- It was hot, hazy and humid -- 100+ degrees.
Traffic -- all backed up because it was around the time of the Big Dig bridge collapse in Boston.
Problem -- Got a map off the Internet with directions a week before the event and told my husband to look them over. While on the road, he missed the exit and we were out of the way by 44 miles, he then admitted he did not look at the maps we provided him.
Problem #2 -- My daughter was extremely upset she would miss her battle time with this news.  We got there 4 hours later due to the lost factor.

We entered the Mall on one end which was actually where the end of the line was.  The line was now in a U shape, the other end of the Mall was where all the set up was.
It was mobbed.  There were a few thousand people there.
As we were waiting, and the line moved slow, a couple of Pokemon custodians and line Keepers came by, I asked about the battling for qualifiers.  I was told we would have to go register.  So my daughter and I headed up to register at the other end of the Mall while my husband and son waited in line.

Even though she had her downloaded papers, that was not enough.  It was a good thing I went with her to register because they made parents sign a permission slip. This was never mentioned not even on the qualifying papers. Once it was signed, she was given an official shirt to put on before she began battling.

Although we were late, the battles had yet to begin since they organized the battles by those who registered with the parental signature, thank goodness for that flub.  There were two groups: 12 and under, and 13 and over.  Each group had subgroups.
The of the set up was in front of Macy's and worst of all -- the perfume counter was at the entry of the store and it was very difficult to breathe.  The Mall also had overhead skylights so we were also exposed to all the sunlight and HEAT it produced.
This was a very trying situation for anyone with allergies, like me.
We went into Macy's and used a dressing room so she could put on her official battling shirt.

She waited in line while I ran back to the other end of the waiting line to tell my husband and son she would be battling.  They left the line after I told them this to watch the battle, although we could not see anything, it was more a wait and see what happens issue.

Finally after a 30 minute wait, the battling began in assigned groups.
Gameboys were hooked up to computers/TVs so that games could be seen on larger screens.
People who used a GameShark (loads Pokemon onto their GameBoy without earning them) were automatically eliminated.
Most were eliminated from the competition within 15 minutes.
Making it on to the next round within the group meant you had to win with the original partner, move onto another partner until there was only one left from the group.
Each group winner battled the other group winners until one person was left and declared the winner.
The one winner got lots of goodies.

My daughter did well within her group but she ended up losing to another kid who she says, did not groom his Pokemon properly and abused some of the Pokemon's powers in order to win.
Evidently, Pokemon have to have balance and his did not.  We later found out, that this was common however, not right.

So after a few hours at the Mall. It was over BUT we found out that since my husband and son left the line, we would have to go back to the end of the line so she could get her Pokemon loaded up on her GameBoy, the real reason for the event and the whole purpose for going there.  The line now was longer than when we first went which meant staying several more hours waiting in line.

Why could the battlers get their free Pokemon uploaded at a special table AFTER they completed their battling as a consolation prize?  Move from the battling table to a checkout table for the upload versus getting into the long line AGAIN.

I was going crazy.  We had already travelled several hours, we had been there for hours, and it would be another few hours in the line then to go home.  The two small dogs were at home and I was very concerned about them.  My husband and I thought this was enough and we left although my daughter was extremely disappointed.  We left early am and got home around dinner time, all in the heat.

So here are some tips and information:
1. Know that if your child is officially battling and you have to wait in line, bring a second adult to stand in line as a place holder so you can collect the free Pokemon giveaway after a battle is over.
Bring crackers and bottled water. Be prepared to stand for a long period.  Some people brought those portable folding chairs in a sack.

2. Bring a spare GameBoy and Pokemon games in case you get to the front of the line for the trade while your child is battling and get the transfer/trade or gift.  Make sure you get the instructions from your child which Pokemon in what game they wish to give up for a trade.  Write it down.

3. Know that parents must sign permission forms depending on the event, especially if there is battling involved.  Immediately go to the registration table with your downloaded official papers.

4.  Depending on the , most of these events are mobbed and crazy.  There are long waits.  It is NOT a good idea to bring children under the age of 6.

5. Not all players are on the same level.  Kids with GameBoys can battle in line however, my daughter found out, that most were not advanced players making her choices limited.  She was also planning on battling with others from her online forum but it was nearly impossible to find them so you need to develop some sort of plan.

6. More boys do this than girls, there were young adults/college kids playing also.

7. At smaller events, like at designated stores (example: ToysRUs), they do occasionally have free exchanges or downloads of Pokemon that can be added to a game.  These events are usually advertised in the store only.

There is a time limit (a few hours) but also, each store is given so many Pokemon to give out based on their sales.  So if you get there early, you will have to wait in line (we have waited an hour to ninety minutes) and the exchange (giving one Pokemon up to get another) or "gift" (getting a new Pokemon), can take 5-10 minutes per person.  Most smaller events, there is only ONE official Nintendo person doing the exchange/trade/gift.

If a store has the gift giveaway, and a time limit, if all Pokemon are issued (the number issued to each store based on sales), that is the end.  If there are still people in line at the end of the time limit, if there are Pokemon left, the line is cut off at the time end, and you just wait your turn, hopefully there are Pokemon left for you to get one.  No one can get into the line after the specified end time limit.

I hope I have explained this and shed a little light on the time consuming process.

My kids love the Pokemon GameBoy games.  My daughter says they are the best buy because you can keep on playing them, adding to them (like what she gets at events), and go up levels or challenges depending on how you take care of and groom your Pokemon.
She only has Pokemon games and has had them for years and plays them over and over on various levels.  She got a second GameBoy (used) to trade within her own games.  She even got some used games.

Other games, you play, you reach the end, and that is it, no more levels, no more challenges and you are out $30.  These games can be traded in for cash/credit at game shops.  We have also seen them selling for $5.00 per game at yardsales.

Best regards,
"Pokeymom"

Pokemon

2007-04-23

Yesterday was a big day in the world of Pokemon Fanatics -- the Diamond and Pearl games came out.

My daughter was out the door early AM (7:30 am) to pick up her reserved copy. My son went along for the ride. We live in the sticks, the store was 30-40 minutes away.

My husband took them (kids did not want me to come, I will post why later) and after the pick up (no line), he went to Home Depot to get some "stuff". When they got home several hours later, the kids complained he spent too much time in Home Depot, more than an hour.  It was torture for them even though my daughter had her game and was playing it.

I stayed home and had some peace and quiet.  Got things done without interuption.
Wish there were more times like that.

Sibling Day

2007-04-11

On Oprah, she mentioned that Tuesday April 10th was National Sibling Day although only half the states recognize it and the other half don't.  Her audience was filled with siblings and her show was about siblings.

I liked the little adopted girls from China story the best.  Both adopted by Americans (two different families), both named them Mia, and from a post in an online adoption community, the two Moms met, chatted, then found similarities to the stories, traded pictures and saw more similarities. They had DNA testing done and found out that the two girls were sisters.  Both had been abandoned at the same place at different times then placed in an orphanage, then adopted.

Kudos to the Mom raising her children alone after her husband's sudden death.  They turned out fine.  She said she kept them at home, in school, and in church.

Here is my quick sibling story:

My daughter had to have several teeth removed because her mouth was too small.
We took her to the dentist and she underwent surgery.  We brought her home and she was resting/sleeping on the sofa when my son came home from kindergarten.

Not use to seeing his sister knocked out he turned and asked me if she was dead.

I had to explain to him that the drugs they gave her made her very tired and sleepy for a day or so.

Siblings can be funny.

The Grammar Girl on Oprah

2007-04-10

Since Doe's  last post about "then and than" usage, I got to thinking what my pet peeve is.

It is your and you are aka you're, a contraction.
Your means belonging to you.
You are  or You're welcome.

Now, what is so annoying is when people make PSP snags and tags and put your welcome versus (not verses)  you're welcome.

And then there is yore, as in "days of yore" meaning yesteryear. Yore is not used much anymore, maybe in a song, and an old song at that.

Your, you're, yore are homonyms or homophones -- sound the same spelled differently, and different definitions.

Now on Oprah -- a viewer wrote in about incorrect English on Oprah and Gayle's Road Trip graphic that drove her crazy.
She said it should be Oprah's and Gayle's Road Trip, each name gets an apostrophe s.

The Grammar Girl (the guest expert) says if it is two people doing the same thing or owning the same thing, then the last name gets the apostrophe s, not both names.

Remember it is Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream as the example.

So for any other usage issues, you can visit The Grammar Girl who was seen on Oprah, and listen to her audio quips of Quick and Dirty Tips to Clean Up Your Writing, or read her blog and all the language usage comments by her readers.

You might learn something new, or refresh your memory.

Vegetable Pizza Squares

2007-04-08

My neighbor made this and it was delicious as well as addicting!
It is so easy to make.
While the crust is baking and cooling, just mix up ingredients and cut up the veggies.

2 packages of refrigerated Cresent Rolls (Pillsbury) for the base "crust".
Unroll, and lay out pinching the seams together in a 9 x 13 inch pan.
Bake for 12 minutes on 375.  Let it cool for about 15 minutes.

Combine together in a bowl:
2 packages of softened Cream Cheese (Philadephia Brand or store brand)
1 cup of Cain's or Hellman's mayonaise (store brand ok)
1 dry package of Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing

After the crust has been baked and cooled, smear the cream cheese/mayo/dressing mix on top of the crust.

Add one cup of each of the following freshly chopped vegetables on the top: green peppers (or a combo of various colored peppers), broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, carrots (can use baby baby carrots, the tiny skinny ones, or just shred a carrot in the food processor for texture.)

Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over the top.
Refrigerate for an hour before serving.

Great for an appetizer or pot luck.
