SciFi TV

2007-05-31

When I was in my blissful youth, my neighbor Harry would run around the yard humming the theme song to Dr. Who.  When ever you would talk to him, it was all Who_visim. We had no idea what he was talking about but he was really into it.

Down life's road, I met my husband at college. After we were married, PBS started rebroadcasting all the old Dr. Who programs (black and white and goofy sets and the dreaded out of control robot Daleks who wanted universe domination of themselves) and he became addicted.  We even visited Longleat in England and went to the Dr. Who museum there which included most of the BBC props used filming the 1960's show, you had to walk through the TARDIS box to enter the museum and were greeted by K9.

He also loved to watch Star Trek, the old series.  Then the new series (yes a few of them with various titles) came on and I was forced to watch it.  I think my biggest laugh on that show was Worf doing the Klingon Love Call.  I did like the Betazoid Counselor Deanna Troi.  Most interesting was that little light beam that got her pregnant, she did not know what was wrong with her, and the baby developed and came real fast.

And how I could not wait to find out  what would become of Captain Picard after he was transformed into a Borg as a season closer.  I could not believe how into this show I was.

Then there were the X Files and Battle Star Gallactica, both the old an new, and Quantum Leap (I like this one).

My picks for my favorite Science Fiction: One Step Beyond, Twilight ZoneMy Favorite Martian, Third Rock From the Sun, and Mystery Science Theatre, which I wish was still on.  If you never saw it, a couple of bots and a regular guy would watch old scifi movies and add their comments which were hilarious, as if they rewrote the original script.

Yesterday on the SciFi channel they ran six hours of the new Dr. Who with David Tennant as the time travelling Dr. spinning around the universe in the TARDIS Police Box (great opening with the special effects).  I think he is a wonderful actor ( a few PBS Masterpiece Theatre productions under his belt) and I really liked it, campy dialogue and all effects and his wild but defining hair style!  One of the episodes I saw was that of an evil woman wanting more power but was confined to inside of the TV. During the Coronation of ERII, she was going to suck all the faces off the viewers so she could be free from the box. Naturally, Dr. Who stopped her although he got a bit of a shock doing so.

In particular, I liked the idea of watching too much TV, that this could really happen making it no longer Science Fiction but reality.

I will have to tell  warn my kids about it.

Dr. Who makes another marathon appearance on June 8 (8 am-4pm EST) and the new season begins in July.  Check your listings.

Memorial Day Remembrance Poems

2007-05-28

I hope every one is having a safe weekend.

Here are a couple of sentiments to honor our heroes. (Suitable for scrap-booking)

I'll Be Brave

I will be brave, daddy
When you have to deploy
although it is so awful
And takes away my joy.
I will be brave for mommy
For she will miss you so
I love you so very much
Do you really have to go?
I will do my very best
To be good while you're away
I will be brave, daddy
But . . . just not today

In Gratitude

Our thanks we give to our heroes
Who serve our country each day.
Our heartfelt appreciation we offer
For all they do and say.
Our appreciation is sincere
For we know that we should be
Offering prayers of gratitude
To those who help keep us free.
They do not all win medals
Or make the evening news at 10.
They serve their country every day
And you call them your friend.

Both sentiments are from the book Military Moments by Thena Smith

Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah 5.25

2007-05-26

Oprah's show was about bringing peace and calm into your life and home.

First up was Dr. Oz -- he said that the average amount of sex males have is 56 times a year.  He said if that number was increased 3 or 4 times, it could add another 6 years to their lives.
He said that men like quantity where as woman like quality.

He mentioned and stressed that women need to be selfless and take care of themselves first so that they can take care of others.

Breathe Right
The correct way to breathe is to take in air and blow up your diaphragm (not your lungs) like a balloon then you use your stomach muscles and press them inwards pushing the air out.
Four breaths in and four breaths out is good practice.
My notes:
This is the same sort of breathing they teach when you learn how to sing.
It is also good breathing to use if you are constipated.
It is also good breathing to use to calm yourself down in a panic.

A lady loses 10 pounds without dieting!
She decided after the spa event to sit down, focus on her food, taking her time eating slowly and eat for twenty minutes.  She said she no longer eats on the run or eats standing up.
By doing this, making it a healthy choice and habit, she lost 10 pounds.

Next topic was about amputating bad relationships.
Yes it is hard but bad relationships can wear you down and out and create unbearable stress.
The stress wears your body out and ages you fast on the inside and out.
You need to let go and don't turn back, move forward.

"Not forgiving, holding resentment, holding a grudge is like drinking poison hoping the other person dies." (Oprah had said in another show that Nelson Mandella said this to her, however, at Brainy Quote, credit was given to actress Carrie Fisher.)

Dr. Oz says that only 1% of reality is really important to us but we forget about it most days rather than focusing on it and enveloping our lives around it daily. He says he sees this all the time in dying patients.

Four tips for a better quality and longer life he mentions:
1. Keep the bad foods out of your house. Don't buy them.
2. Eat no food with trans fats.
3. Exercise regularly.
4. Express gratitude and appreciation, be positive, and forgive someone and move on.

Martha Beck then spoke of how many woman have no self compassion and that is important to give to yourself.
Imagine you are taking care of a very ill person.  You are heartbroken that they are so ill.  You watch them sleep and hope that they heal.  Then they roll over and you see that it is you in that bed.

She stressed that your only job as a mom is to love yourself first because children pattern the behavior they see.
She told an interesting story she heard from another colleague, when the colleague asked a patient what he thought of his mother, she thought she would hear the same old positive comment followed by anger comments.  Instead she heard him say, "My mother loved life!" energetically and enthusiastically.  She was surprised at this answer.

When Moms show their children that they love themselves and  love life, they show their children how to live positively and grow up with confidence knowing who they are.

When Moms love the children more than they love themselves or take care of themselves first, the children never learn to love and accept themselves as grown ups.  I believe this is so true!

Waking up and being enlightened is not so bad, it is the raw material you need to restart yourself, make the recognition and make a positive change.

Bob Greene suggested that instead of adding speed on a treadmill, add a hill.
Commit yourself to 20-30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week.

Then there was the Equine Therapy segment.  At the spa, a challenge was to get a horse to allow you to lift it's hoof so you could clean it out.  The theory is that how you treat/approach the horse is how you treat/approach everything in life.  Horses are living lie detectors, they can tell if you are being authentic.  They feel this authenticity by the energy around them.
Our horse Marcy is a therapy horse so we know this to be true.

Sorry, Dr. Oz was not shirtless on this show (He was when he got the Rolfing massage and when he used himself in a picture to show how he would age taking care of himself or neglecting himself.).
On another show earlier, and off the show topic, there was a quick segment on Dr. Oz and who is his wife as many viewers wanted to know. Her name is Lisa and she and Dr. Oz were doing Yoga together because she said if you can't beat him, join him!  It was not mentioned if they had children or how long he has been married.

Homemade Lemonade

2007-05-25

Homemade Lemonade

Summer is coming!

Great for the kids to sell at your yardsale or as at a fundraiser booth. Make in batches to make more.

Homemade Lemonade Recipe:

1 c fresh lemon juice (approximately 5 or 6 large lemons)
3/4 cups of sugar
3 1/2- 4  cups of water

Slice one half lemon and place slices in the bottom of your beverage container. In a measuring bowl, mix the juice, sugar, and water. Pour over the lemon slices. Refrigerate. Yields a little over 1 qt

You may want to add a little of the water to the sugar and melt it to a syrup it so that the sugar does not clump at the bottom of the pitcher.  Let it cool just a bit before adding but not so cool it becomes a solid again.

Another idea:
Using an empty gallon jug from spring water, add a little water (1-2 cups) to it and freeze creating a small block of ice, then add the lemonade mixture to the jug minus the amount of water you put in the jug to keep it cold.  This also makes the drink portable and great for a classroom treat.

A Strange Name

2007-05-25

A  house near us is for sale and the agents surname is Strange.

I though what an interesting name and how did that come to be?

Then I started thinking of how we use surnames --
The Strange House
Members of the family could be called Strangers
At school, the Strange child or the Strange children
Mr. or Mrs. Strange
The Strange Family
The family newsletter or website: Stange Happenings
A business -- The Strange Associates or Strange Pizza, The Strange Store
And if you lived next to them -- the Strange neighbors
Other relatives with different last names can say they have Strange Relatives

There are five Strange families listed in the local phone book and one even Stranger family (Stranger than fiction?).

How strange!  I am sure they heard plenty of jokes about their last name. I hope they have a sense of humor

Vileda ProScrub

2007-05-24

Lucky me, I got one for $10.00 at WalMart.  It came with an extra sponge for free.  I liked it because it has a scrubby brush on the top and the extra absorbent sponge (by 25% the package says).  It has an easy grip handle that when pressed, squeezes/wrings the sponge.  The scrubby brush will come in handy with the kids gunky messes plastered on the floor.  It is from the O-Cedar family.

I had paid a higher price for a simliar type "quality" (so it said) one at Home Depot but it kept on falling apart. That did not last but a few years.  I would mop, and the sponge would keep on falling off and the cap on the end of the handle would fall off too.

So yesterday, I was getting ready to wash the floors.  I had my bucket of Lysol Lavendar All Purpose Cleaner suds and my ProScrub ready to tackle the floor job when all of a sudden I realize -- the head would NOT fit into my standard bucket!! That is because you get an extra wide sponge at 10 inches (stated on the package). Larger sponge equals less time to clean.

We had to find a rectangular wastebasket to hold the water.  The job was done and I was satisfied with the product.  Makes washing the floor "fun" and fast, more time to blog!

The sponge was nice and tight and did not move losely while going back and forth.
I was not slopping water or had puddles all over the floor because the sponge was so absorbent.
The floor dried in less time than usual, a big plus from the other product.

The instructions say that if you use bleach or vinegar, it will wear the sponge down and to always rinse and wring three times before letting the sponge dry out.

Then after it dried and I admired the floor, the traffic came through the house and the clean floor did not last long.

I had also considered getting one of those ProMates, the steam heat cleaning systems but did not want to spend that sort of money.  We ordered a Shark from Overstock.com but it came broken three times and we had to return it three times.

Such is life -- always cleaning up one mess after another.

Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah 5.21

2007-05-21

Dr. Oz held an "Advanced Class" on Oprah's Monday 5/21 show.

(If you are looking for something specific, click on Edit in your tool bar and  then Find on this page, type the words in the box then click Next. The word you are looking for should highlight on the page.)

Worms in poop -- what is this? a viewer writes.
Dr. Oz says parasites are a problem in most people but 20% of children have them, in particular, pin-worms.
He said they are picked up through the fingers, then left on toys, the fingers go into the mouth, they live in the gut then, they get pooped out.

To check to see if your child has pin-worms, you can do this test at home.
Place a piece of tape over the child's anus when sleeping.  In the morning, check the tape.
Them mother pin-worm comes out at night and leaves eggs, the eggs will stick to the tape for evidence.
If your child has pin-worms, other family members may also have it.

A viewer wrote in to ask if sushi was safe and free of parasites.
Dr. Oz said that sushi gets a flash freeze before packaging and this kills the parasites.
A good sushi chef can tell the difference between the treated sushi and not treated sushi.

Can my child get a bacterial infection from swimming in lake water?
Yes, giardia (giardia lamblia), a parasite can irritate the stomach causing diarrhea, abdominal pain, stomach cramps.
Dr. Oz mentioned at this time that floating poops are caused by too much fat in them.
He said giardia is treatable with medications.

Next was show and tell with a tapeworm.
He said that they can be 30 feet long and live in someone for 20 years.  A blood test can determine if you have tapeworm.
He said the head of the tapeworm segments hooks itself onto your intestine, then eats all your food while you lose weight because you are not getting the food absorbed in you.
Tapeworm is found in raw meat so cook your food properly to avoid this.

Hookworm was the next topic.  He said that they caused "southern anemia" because hookworm enters through your feet.
Dr. Oz said that this was one of the reasons why during the Civil War, the south lost so many soldiers, the southern boys went barefoot picking hookworm up and getting infected/infested while the northern boys wore leather shoes because of living on farms.

Acupressure was then demonstrated on energy meridians pressure points.
Imagine that a hose runs up your arm to your shoulder.
For a headache -- apply pressure between your thumb and index finger.
For motion sickness -- apply pressure just three inches or so above the wrist on the inside of your arm.
To release/relive stress -- apply pressure near the neck base.

Next was pen*is fish as featured on Gray's Anatomy.
This may happen to a man, if he swims in the Amazon.
The fish is very small.  It swims/wiggles up the urethra and makes itself at home.
The only way to get rid of it is by surgical removal.

If you are thinking of having a baby, should you wear briefs or boxers?
Briefs are tight and do not allow the sperm to keep cool so they can mature.
Tight briefs, tight pants can do more harm than good.
Boxers allow the air to circulate.  Wear boxers.
Bike riding does cause impotence because there is pressure between the pen*is and anus and this blocks off blood circulation. This can influence the quality of sex. Get a better bike seat that conforms to your shape and size.

Don't stay in the hot tub or any place hot too long, a half hour is good enough, anything more can affect fertility.

Amy who demonstrated the netipot/nettipot/nose bidet/nose flush the last show (April, see synopsis link below) said she has had no sinus headache nor has bought any sinus product since she started washing/flushing out her nasal cavities.
One of Oprah's staff people said she started doing the same and it has improved and changed her life.
Dr. Oz reminded people that you should use a warm water saline solution.  Using cold could give you a headache.
He also said that people say they can't buy a nettipot because after his appearance, they seemed to fly off the shelves.
I have seen in the allergy section of the drug store a syringe bulb type apparatus with saline solution that does the same thing.

Kelsey with the stinky feet from the last show said that soaking her feet in tepid tea for a week helped her feet become unstinky and her room mates were happy.
Dr. Oz says we lose a pint of fluid a day mostly through the feet and that the tea helps dry the skin out.
He also suggested wearing absorbent socks.

Cure for a hangover --
First if you are drinking wine, have water with it.
Darker alcohols like rum or brandy, have more chemicals in them that can cause a hangover.
After drinking and before you go to bed, take a couple of aspirin and that should neutralize a hangover.
He also suggested drinking coffee because it is a stimulant.
He also suggested eating eggs the next morning to help cleanse the liver.

A mom asked if her daughter was developing too early at age 7/8.
Dr. Oz explained that during the last 100 years, puberty happens earlier and earlier because of better diet.
Overweight girls develop earlier because their fat cells trigger insulin to jump start the process.
Black girls have this happen to them more.

Antibacterial products, are they safe to use?
Don't overuse.  Killing the bad germs is a good thing but you have lots of good germs too that help keep the bad germs away.
Using the alcohol sanitizers during flu season is a good idea.

Left handed people are smarter! Oprah was happy about that.

Then Dr. Oz gave an eye dominant quiz.  He made a hole in a card and asked Oprah to look through it.  Which eye could she see Ok with through the hole and which one could she not see a thing. When you can see through the whole, that is the dominant eye.

In the end, it is good to learn about your body and how it functions.
Viewers who tune in are the care takers and teachers who end up sharing this information, like me!

Stay healthy.

Sarah Jessica Parker on Oprah

2007-05-18

Fab Without Fortune was today's Oprah Show theme.

How to get more quality clothing for less, look stylish, and have your home have that designer's touch.

First up was Sarah Jessica Parker whose new clothing line will exclusively be available at Steve and Barry's stores June 7th.
Sarah will also be the guest fashion editor in the July issue of Oprah on sale June 19th.

Sarah says her line of clothing called "Bitten" has 400 items sizes 2-22 and each piece is priced under $20.00.  She also has shoes sized 5-11 in her collection.

Sarah explained the acting term "Bitten by the bug" -- once on stage and getting the acting bug, you are bitten, and want to come back, hence the name of her clothing line.  If you love the style, the price, and the quality, you will be "bitten" and come back for more.

She says her line includes stylish classical affordable  items priced afford-ably and are quality.  She says she wears her own line everyday, she said with the exception of the shoes though.  She said you can save buying her clothing and then splurge on the shoes.

There was a fashion show and items they showed were all nice looking on the picture perfect models.  Items were coats, dresses, suits (buy per piece), shirts, sweaters, vest, a variety of jeans, bags, and shoes.  There were a few pieces I would get for myself!

Sarah said that a sweater should never cost more than your weekly groceries.
"Poetic necessity, everything you need at an affordable price." she said.

Next up was Victoria Hagan, interior designer, who spoke of her Perfect Pieces Collection (vases, pillows, end tables, and other accessories) at Target.

NBA star Stephon Marbury came on with his new affordable sneaker priced under $!5.00 available at Steve and Barry's Stores.  Sarah said that when she heard his story, she was inspired to create a line of affordable clothing too.

There were four simple and basic classic bridal gowns and Oprah asked the audience to pick which one was under $100.
It turns out that there was one for that price and the other three were priced under $160.
All are available from the Issac Mizrahi Bridal Collection at Target.

I had never heard of the chain Steve and Barry's.  I was also wondering if the clothing was produced so inexpensively where was it coming from, certainly not the USA.  I found out it is produced in Africa.  I hope Sarah Jessica Parker does not have Kathie Lee Gilford issues.

Check out this Business Week article Steve and Barry's Rules the Mall -- it states they don't advertise but depend on  word of mouth, plus how they got started and operate their business.

Go to the Steve and Barry's website to find a store near you.

See the Bitten Fashion Show (19 pictures).

BittenSJP -- official website, you can see a slide show (was really fast for me), find a store locator and get on a mailing list for fashion updates.

Update: Sarah Jessica Parker aka SJP also was showing her affordable Bitten line of clothing on the Today Show June 8th, 2007.
Part of the segment showed the mad rush of people attacking the clothing racks the minute the store opened up.  Sarah talked with Matt Lauer about how the quality of the clothing for the price was an important factor in production.

How Many of Me

2007-05-18

I was surfing and found this interesting site for you to check out.
See how many people have the same name as you in the USA according to the census.

There are 528, 276 other people in the USA named Jean.  It is the 100th most popular first name. 90% of Jeans are female.

There are 1,540 people in the USA with my last name and that ranks 18,849th most popular last name.

There are 3 other people in the USA with the same name as me.

I bet if I did my middle name, then I would be the only one of me and the most original.

TV Wrap Up

2007-05-18

Well, May is almost over!  The year is half gone!

It is now down to the wire on the following shows and who will win!

1. American Idol -- Blake or Jordin?  Jordin has more potential in my opinion. I was surprised to see Melinda go but she showed more talent than her personality.  Personality sells.

2. Dancing with the Stars -- Apolo and Julianna, Joey and Kim, Laila and Maks -- gee, they are all so good it is hard to tell.

3.The Bachelor -- will fine Dr. Andy pick Tessa or Bevin?  Someone will be brokenhearted.  Best of luck to either one but I think it might be Bevin.

Medium -- the season finale -- now we must wait to see if Joe keeps his job and Allison gets put back on her job.  Will the DA come back from his trip or will that other DA be a new cast member -- I don't like him much.

Law and Order -- I only tune in to see what Det. Greene is up to.

I look forward to So You Think You Can Dance beginning soon.  I wonder how winner Benji is doing from last season.

My kids look forward to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl beginning in June.  Other than that, they have to watch reruns of Avatar and Naruto.  I do have to say, I like that Naruto theme from Season 2.

Dr. Oz's Health Quiz on Oprah

2007-05-15

Today (5/15) Dr. Oz gave the Oprah's audience and all viewers a health quiz.
Here is a synopsis (the third one on Dr. Oz's Guest Appearances) of today's show by my notes.

(If you are looking for something specific, click on Edit in your tool bar and  then Find on this page, type the words in the box then click Next. The word you are looking for should highlight on the page.)

1.  Poop should be S-shaped and slid out.  Anything odd should be reported to your doctor for further analysis.

2.  You should get 25 grams of fiber every day.  Dr. Oz says most Americans only get 10 grams.
Fiber will help give you the S-shaped poop.  Fruits, vegetables, whole wheat pasta, peas, lentils, legumes, a large handful of walnuts, and oatmeal are great fiber foods.
Increase your water intake with an increase of fiber in your diet.
More fiber means healthier you and helps with lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and helps prevent diabetes.

3.  If you drink enough water per day, your urine should be clear, so clear you can read through it.
Some foods may make urine darker or have an odor to it.  Drink enough fluids to help digest your food, and wash out toxins.

4.  The most dangerous fat on your body is in the belly area.  Your omentum stores fat.
Dr. Oz says that for every 35 pounds a man loses he gains an inch on his pen-is however, that inch tapers off and it depends on the person and weight loss.

5.  What are  flavonoids and where do you find them?  They are found in food and contain antioxidants.

6.  What are the best foods to slow down your biological body clock? Bananas.  Keep in mind that salt in processed foods is about 90% so cut down on these.

7.  Your blood pressure is the most important number to know.  120/80 and under is best.  Elevated blood pressure takes years off your life.

8.  Dr. Oz showed a graphic of himself (shirtless again) aging -- one picture was that of himself who took care of his mind and body through diet and exercise, and the other if he did not.  He mentioned how the body as we age shrinks.

9.  Impotence is caused by heart disease.  Keep nitrate oxides in your diet. (Viagra is a nitrate oxide drug.)

10.  Heart attacks happen on Monday mornings due to a time of change and stress (like going to work).

11.  A viewer asked how to take care of a jellyfish sting?  Wash with salt water and poor vinegar on it.  Acidic urine would work also but it needs to be acidic so vinegar is a more reliable product.

12.  Having regular sex, 200 times a year, can reduce your physiological age an average of six (6) years.  The average amount of sex was 58 times a year, well below that 200 times mark.

13.  Another view asked about how to remove a tick a safely and quickly.
Pluck it out using tweezers, just flip the tick and pull it out.

14.  Another view wondered why mosquitoes liked to bite her but not her husband.
Genetics, diet, perfume, deodorant, and lotion (except Avon's Skin So Soft, they hate that), call out to a mosquito.  Also, if you have a lot of body hair, this is good because the hair keeps the mosquitoes away.  Dr. Oz said that chances are if you have lots of body hair, your ancestors come from a country where malaria was a prevalent disease.

15.  Dr. Oz stopped off at a lab and brought a few good sized gall stones for show and tell.  He said the large ones are not the problem, it is the small ones that can cause blockage in the pancreas and interrupt the flow of the body.

16.  Another view asked about ice cream headaches or brain freeze. Dr. Oz explained it is the "arteries spazzing out" or dialating arteries  that causes this.  His remedy is to hold and press the tip of your tongue up against the roof of your mouth in back of your teeth to prevent this.

17.   Guess the organ on the diagram: The spleen helps keep the immune system keep in check.  It is common during a trauma that the spleen gets injured but bounces back quickly.

18.  Many people wonder about losing their memory.  He gave a quiz to see if you could remember 6 numbers he said without writing them down and then it was commercial break.
He explained it was common to forget things however Alzeheimers is then the chemical glue in our brain gets gunked up and when you cannot remember what something is or how to use it or cannot recall what the object is (usually someone else will notice this since you can't remember), then it is time to get a check up.

Stay Healthy!

Mother's Day Report

2007-05-14

My son (age 9) planned a treasure hunt for me.

He made up little post-it notes and pictures and put them around the house.

I was suppose to find the notes about Pokemon Mew.

So the treasure hunt was really not for me as much as it was for him.  On his GameBoy Saturday night, he found Mew but Mew did not want to join his team so he was unhappy about it and this is how he expressed it.

I suppose his unhappiness turned into happiness by his drawings and notes then planning a treasure hunt for me.  He was thrilled when I found them all.

We stayed home most of the day, tinkered, and played games.
My daughter wanted to try the Dominio's Steak and Cheese Pizza so we had to drive miles to get one.  It was pretty tastey.

The weather was great and a year ago Mother's Day weekend, our town got flooded out.
Less than a year later, it got flooded out again.
Clean up is almost complete.

Pregnancy, Estrogen and Women

2007-05-12

A crazy and funny email I got and am sharing with you!

Pregnancy Q & A & more!

Q: Should I have a baby after 35?
A: No, 35 children is enough.

Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A: With any luck, right after he finishes college.

Q: What is the most reliable method to determine a baby's sex?
A: Childbirth.

Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she's borderline irrational.
A: So what's your question?

Q: My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but pressure. Is she right?
A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.

Q: When is the best time to get an epidural?
A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.

Q: Is there any reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labor?
A: Not unless the word "alimony" means anything to you.

Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth?
A: Yes, pregnancy.

Q: Do I have to have a baby shower?
A: Not if you change the baby's diaper very quickly.

Q: Our baby was born last week. When will my wife begin to feel and act normal again?
A: When the kids are in college.

The Squirrel Launcher

2007-05-12

My husband was told about this at work.

I am not too sure what to think although I do think the contraption is clever.
However, in order to use it, someone must be on duty. Notice the guy behind the sliding doors cutting the cord to release the "contraption".

Listen and surf or blog! No program to down load or costs involved.

You get to choose the music genre and decade, whether you want to hear hits only or anything.  You see a graphic and the name of a song with the artist, just click it on and listen.  Let it play by itself or just keep on clicking the songs you want to hear.  You can drag the graphic on the screen to see the selections better.

Lots of fun.

What's in Your Closet?

2007-05-11

I have a few posts in this blog about Oprah's Clean Sweep shows (show synopsis with the presented how to details) where one learns tips on being neater and organizing their "stuff".

I happened to run across this site called FlipBooks and I think the concept is pretty neat.  You create an online scrapbook with pictures, doodles, and media.

Here is a collection of the Closet Case Gallery -- maybe you may get an idea, maybe you may realize you are not as messy as someone else, maybe you might clean your closet or better still, maybe you may feel INSPIRED to do something creative! The bad buys are funny.

How to get rid of Ants

2007-05-10

It is that time of year again when they start to invade.

Last year, I woke up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water in the kitchen and when I turned on the light, there were thousands of those tiny brown ones, I think they were called "pharoah ants".  I watched them march back into the outlet near the counter.  They like to hang out in areas like that. We have black ants to but they come later.

Since there were so many of them I did two things to get rid of them.

1. While on the counter, I used Fantastic with Bleach, which paralyzed them instantly and just wiped them up and tossed them out. The bleach also throws off their little scent track.

2. An effective product is Terro.  I use a piece of cereal box and put a drop of it on it then lay it out in near their entry and on their path.  The ants find the "islands" and bring back the "juice" to the nest and feed it to the other ants.

Usually after three days, they are usually gone.

Make sure you clean your counters and floors well, a bleach product helps.
Put all food away including pet food.

Ants also do not like cucumber peels so you can put those outside near your foundation.

Good luck.

Cleaning a Smooth Top Stove

2007-05-10

I have a smooth glass cook top/ceramic top stove and love it but there are many people who don't and the complaints are numerous.
The main complaint is cleaning it without leaving it streaky or cloudy.

I use the white cream paste to clean it, Weiman Glass Cook Top Cleaner.  There are other brands out there also.

At first, when I was using it, I put too much on and it took forever for it to completely dry then wipe off the thick layer.  After wiping it, I had piles of that chalk stuff to get rid of. The cleaning process took me 30 minutes to an hour.

Now, I just apply a quick very thin W shape, smear it over the top, wait for it to dry, then buff off with a soft cloth.  A thinner even coat dries quicker then is easier to wipe off and the result is still the same, shiny reflective top, looks like new.

Now, my husband, spills stuff and leaves it to burn on the stove top while still cooking.  According to the directions, you can carefully scrap with a razor the burnt gunk off.  I recently showed my husband an easier way to get rid of the cooked on gunk -- use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!  Yes, it does take off the cooked on gunk and leaves the eraser looking a bit burnt from the clean up but what an easy solution.

Just a few more notes -- when we bought our stove (Maytag with the 4 burners and the warming burner) we were told that you needed to use stainless flat surface pots and pans so that the food would cook evenly.  As a Christmas gift my husband got me All-Clad, (because they had more open stock items and came with a few bonus items) which you need to heat the pan up first before adding food (says so in the All Clad use directions).  They are nice but they are an extremely heavy gauge and I have a hard time holding the thin handle if there is food in the pan.  Emeril Lagasse pots and pans are lighter gauge and more affordable and are made by All-Clad also.

Because of the heavy weight of the All-Clad -- I got a few Belgique pans from Macy's that were on the mark down (reasonable prices on sets).  They are not as heavy, have thicker handles, and have no writing indentations on the bottom which would interfere with the heat distribution in the pan.  I love the pasta drain pot (cover has small holes and large holes and locks into place) and the extra deep sauce pan the best.  Now they make them with the copper bottoms and this was another issue with the smooth top stove, do not use copper bottom pots. Circulon and Anolon were also not recommended, they are best used on a gas stove.

A good set of pots and pans will set you back some money, but in the long run, they will last.
If the cost is overwhelming, try saving consistently $10-20 a month till you have enough to buy them.
