PBS - Inspector Lindley
2007-10-18
Well, just as we all thought there was hope for he and his "reincarnated" wife (new actress playing Helen) getting back together, trying to start a family, it all ends tragically . . . again for Helen (killed twice, once in the books (With No-One As Witness) by a couple of punks who shot her at her doorstep, no witnesses, and once by the Bosnian girl with many witnesses (TV Script: In the Blink of an Eye).
What a shock! Now what? Interesting how Havers is always around to save the day for him .
We shall see but of course, we may not find out for quite some time if ever since the BBC has canned the series (which by the way, does NOT follow Elizabeth George's books).
PBS Mystery Inspector Lindley Mysteries -- check your local listings for reruns since it looks like this series has been canned.

Such is life for a 9 year old.

POW Thursday
2007-10-11
Well, I surfed lots of blogs this week and no post stands out as much as a background I saw on one blog, which has haunted me.I cannot remember (getting old), whose blog it was but it loaded slow and the background came up for a minute then the blog loaded. The background reminded me of the 1950's house my parents had, their retro kitchen counter top.
After I saw this background several days ago, it has not left my mind and I am having memories of that kitchen I had not thought of in decades! Including but not limited to the ghastly multicolored floor!
And that stupid broom closet in the corner (poor design) we use to hide in. Yes, and all my Mom kept in there were the mop, broom and dustpan, oh, and the huge tins of cookies Great Aunt Dorothy would send us, those were always kept on the very high shelf.
Then there was the stove, gosh that thing was HUGE. It must have been 42 inches wide. Four burners, huge center, but there was an oven and then a side cabinet. Under the oven portion and the side cabinet (where the Oreo's were kept), was a draw each (pans). The mulititude of buttons that made me think I was operating the Star Trek Enterprise, my goodness, extremely UGLY.
So be it.
The people who bought that house stayed there for several decades.
The people who own it now, well they made it into a regular McMansion with all the additions.
Certainly, someone must have remodelled the kitchen in the process.
I hope so.

Oprah: Dr. Mehment Oz and Jessica Seinfeld 10.8
2007-10-10
Oprah's two guests were Jessica Seinfeld (new book: Deceptively Delicious) and Dr. Oz.The topic was feeding children healthy low fat and tasty food.
Jessica was frustrated with her children's fussy eating habits like so many other parents.
She spends an hour a week making vegetable purees then adding them sneakily into potatoes, brownies, cookies, cakes, donuts, chicken nuggets, and macaroni and cheese to name a few. She stashes her purees in containers in the frig and says they are interchangeable with foods.
These recipes were put to the test by a class of 1st and 2nd graders.
They thought the food was great and could not believe vegetables were contained in what they ate since they hated spinach, broccoli, and cauliflower.
She mentioned how she baked a regular birthday cake for her Dad but Jerry (her husband) complained it did not taste good due to the lack of puree added into her regular cooked foods.
My thought: This all sounds good to try however, if you get use to eating foods that have puree in them, then when you go out to eat, or at a relative's house, the food is going to taste AWFUL to you once you start this regime. /
Dr. Oz, for once, was dressed not in his scrubs as usual, but in a pink shirt and dress pants to match the set.
He said there is a medical reason why children don't like vegetables.
Children have 10,000 taste buds compared to an adult's 3,000.
He said children in past history, were given poison or bitter food. When given sweet food, it was considered safe. Through hundreds of generations, this holds true and it has not changed.
Bland food is no challenge to children.
Dr. Oz said that "white kids" are children of any race or nationality who stick with eating white foods such as white flour, white rice, white bread, and white sugar and have been considered "safe" (comforting) foods.
Discovery Channel's "Honey, We're Killing the Kids" (Tues. 7 pm EST) was showcased.
Three male siblings (children), ate candy, chips, etc. and many more bad foods and were quite overweight. One of them could barely climb stairs without being exhausted.
They had double the body fat of average children their own age.
Dr. Oz said that bad eating habits are slowly killing our children and that the next generation of children will have a shorter life span because of it.
The children's pictures were morphed and showed what they would look like if they continued eating badly for the same amount of time. The parents were shocked at how grossly obese their children would be so they made changes.
Dr. Oz mentioned the importance of the omendum expanding and how it squeezes the kidneys, does not allow insulin to flow as it should by cutting it off and this is what creates diabetes.
He said that children are not physically active like they use to be citing that walking to school use to be the norm but is not now.
Ten months have passed and the three boys have changed their eating/lifestyle habits to get healthy bodies and minds. The parents said it was an emotional journey. The first thing they did, was throw out the junk food and replaced it with healthy foods like fruits, veggies, yogurt.
The boys also took up TaeKwonDo and swimming, cut down their TV viewing and snacking.
Dr. Oz recommends 7-10 grams of fiber at breakfast time as that helps you start the day right.
Fiber helps sugar digest differently and regulates the insulin.
Future problems are preventable today by changing habits now.
Dr. Oz also mentioned that half of Americans eat in front of the TV which means they eat an additional 225+ calories a day which equals 4 extra pounds per month of weight gain.
Taking 500 steps extra per day can make a huge difference in your health.
Dr. Oz's daughter Daphne was in the audience and confirmed that they did Dance Dance Revolution in their home. He did a little demo.
The Top Five Tips
1. Keep bad food items off limits, don't buy it or bring it into the house. Don't stash it for yourself but tell your children they can't have it while you save it for yourself.
2. No eating in front of the TV.
3. Eat more fibrous foods or add more fiber into your diet. (Drink plenty of water also.)
4. Have 10 servings of healthy foods per day.
5. Exercise more and move around more, go for walks, jump rope, dance.
Dr. Oz said that exposing the children to healthy foods ten times, they will eventually eat it.
He also mentioned this fact that men are fatter than women most likely because after a meal, woman move around cleaning up, doing dishes while men go relax in front of the TV.

Bubba Burgers
2007-10-09

I spied the Bubba Burgers in the store and laughed at the name.
I thought the children would be entertained by the name so I bought them on impulse.
Yes, they laughed.
We got the "original" although they come in various other flavors (store did not have those), six to a pack for about $6.50 a box.
Upon opening the box, we discovered that they are individually wrapped, are very thick, and are shaped like what seemed to be the state of Texas? You cook them as is, frozen, to maintain the juiciness, so no waiting for defrosting and very appeallingly quick!
My husband fired up the new Permasteel Grill (bought at the seasonal markdown discount at BJs).
He cooked them although he is having a time with the grill temperature compared to the other grill we had. The Permasteel grill heats up fast and due to the intense heat in the center of the grill, he moved them off to the side of the grill where they cooked nicely and of course, had perfect grilling lines on them.
Naturally, when done, Texas shrunk a bit and looked a bit deformed but still interesting and were juicy.
Taste wise, we all liked them better than the premade patties bought at the meat counter.
The bonus here -- was the packaging. My husband recycled the logo off the package (as pictured above) and made a bill board sign out of it for his Lionel O scale train landscape.

2007-10-08
So it was a very busy long weekend here.Friday, the children had a half day of school. We had some Chocolate Lava Cake (see post below for recipes).
Saturday we went to a party.
Sunday we had a day trip. Good plan since we lost power around 7 am. Breakfast was cooked on the Permasteel gas grill.
Today we went shopping and I worked on the "prize winning" Halloween costumes.
I also read a book.
Next few weekends, I shall be raking leaves.

POW Thursday
2007-10-08
POW= Post of the Week that gives me a posting idea of my own related to what I read.Over at The Soda Stand -- I see a post about boxes and boxes of storage.
Hmmmm . . . a situation that looks so familiar.
When we moved, I had the brillant idea to just pack up boxes. I failed to label them thinking I would remember (photographic memory) what was in each one.
Since I celebrated a few birthdays, am aging, and now, the boxes are still here, and I am at a loss as to what is in each one although I do surprise myself each time I open one up and find things that I forgot I have!
Yes, it is Sunday, oh, sorry, Monday, and I am just writing Thursday's post.
See that, I have aged and now I am confused.

Oprah: Dr. Mehment Oz 10.1 Men's Edition
2007-10-03
It was an audience of men with Dr. Oz discussing male health issues of concern.
1. Many letters were received about men engaging in sexual relations and they hear a pop and have some pain. A man in the audience related to this story. This is a sign of a broken penis and one must have surgery to correct the matter. The man in the audience said he went to the ER right away and got himself fixed.
2. To circumcise or not to. Forty years ago, this was common and 90% of the male population had this done. Today only 57% have it done. Doctors leave it up to the parents to decide. Some do it as tradition or others for religious reasons.
Good reasons to have it done are that there is less infection, less spread of HIV diseases (used Africa as an example), and easier to keep clean.
Dr. Oz did say that an uncircumcised penis feels more during sex.
3. Erectile Dysfunction - he mentioned that garlic with an antidote of parsley or oysters are natural helpers and if need be, drugs.
4. Vasectomies -- a safe and common procedure. Normal functions stay the same but make sure after the procedure, that you have a sperm count to check to see if the sperm count has dropped.
Someone asked about reversing a vasectomy -- Dr. Oz said it was tricky and not uniformly successful to re-attach.
5. Urination patterns will change after the age of 40 for most men. Dr. Oz showed a bladder with prostate sample and demonstrated how the prostrate enlarges to block the urination path causing frequent runs, or the feeling of feeling full again after you go.
He showed how prostrate cancer cell mass feels, like a hard walnut that also blocks urination.
He said that a simple PSA test is needed to detect prostrate cancer.
6. Testicular cancer is predominate in males 15-35, during the viral years.
He said that men should check themselves regularly starting at age 15 (warm bath) for lumps/nodules, or have a sensitivity to the breasts. Very treatable if found in early stages.
He also asked the men which way their penis hung, and said it hangs/or bends to the left or right depending on which testicle is lower. He showed a picture of how avocados grow to demonstrate what he was talking about.
7. Derek Jeter asked how to cure his lack of sleep.
Dr. Oz recommended that to get to sleep, do not drink caffeinated drinks (coffee) 4 to 5 hours before bedtime.
He also said that watching TV, listening to music, on the computer, or too much light actually jazzes or rev-es you up and then you can't get to sleep.
He said that having milk helps you sleep.
Keep a regular scheduled bedtime hour.
6. Dr. Oz also suggested to eat plenty of bright colored fruits and vegetables to keep antioxidants high in your system to give you energy.
7. Gas -- who has more men or woman? From Dr. Oz's Discovery Health Show -- two ranchers, a man and a women were outfitted with rubber pants and collected their gas for a set time.
The gas was collected into bags that blew up like balloons.
The gas was then released and measured and the man had 3.3 liters of gas while the woman had 3 liters after the set time. Hands down, the man won.
Dr. Oz explained that gas is good for you. It is the bacteria in your body breaking down the waste. Everyone has it, at least 2 pounds of it. There is more bacteria in your body than cells.
8. Hair loss/baldness cures. Dr. Oz said that none of the home remedies work. Hair grows a half inch per month. Most baldness is genetic.
The testosterone DHT is like a poison that kills off hair cells. So losing hair is a chemical issue with what the body is producing.
Propecia and Rogaine are effective drugs that helps maintain hair and is more cost effective than surgery.
Woman don't mind baldness Oprah said.
Men worry about baldness, women about cellulite.
9. Frequency of sex -- most once a week on average but if you have sex four times a week, you could live longer.
10. Preventing wrinkles and dry hands -- Foods with Omega 3's (fatty fish) helps. Dr. Oz recommends getting a facial to exfoliate dead cells and rejuvenate the skill to a glow.
?? He said something really quick and garbled about not washing your face everyday because the oils you produce are the natural moisturizers.
MY NOTE: I know that it is recommended not to wash your hair every day for the same reason. If you wash your hands too much, they get dry and scratchy, so the same happens to your skin. Moisturize with lotion, put lotion on before bedtime.
In the winter, we put lotion on before we put out gloves on and that helps with dry winter hands.
11. Colon Cancer -- a man said he lost his brother age 35 to this. Dr. Oz asked if he has had a colonoscopy and recommended he get one soon.
Increase the fiber in your diet. Most Americans get only 7 grams while they should intake 35 grams a day. Fiber helps flush or push out the toxins and cleans out your system.
He recommended lots of leafy green veggies like broccoli to keep your insides clean.
He also said aspirin helps too.
12. Male menopause -- yes, as your natural chemicals decrease with age, so does your muscle mass, virility, sex drive. Getting plenty of sleep, liquids, and exercise helps restore and rejuvenates your system.
13. Men need to take note of their health and become proactive in it. Taking care of yourself for you and your loved ones is not a sign of weakness. You have the education and knowledge use it to motivate you and act on it.
