Creative Experiments - Shoutpost HelpRe-Boyfriend?
2007-09-30
My son (age 9) asked me what the term "re-boyfriend" meant.
I told him I never heard of it. I tried to look it up but found nothing.
So I asked, "Do you mean EX-boyfriend or EX-girlfriend?"
He said "YES! What is that?"
So I explained using "John and Mary", how they broke up, got new "friends", and how they mentioned a fact from their previous relationships to new friends.
My demo included using small dolls as the actors in my brief play.
John says to his new girlfriend Jane how his ex-girlfriend Mary could not boil water.
Mary tells her new boyfriend Bill how her ex-boyfriend John was an airhead.
Then I tell him that there are lots of additional EX's: ex-husband, ex-wife, ex-boss, and X-Men.
He laughed and said, "Mom, that is a MOVIE!"
EX-actly!
Although he may have coined a new word so I will provide a definition:
Re-Boyfriend -- a boyfriend given a second chance with a same girlfriend after a brief break up.

Oprah: Bipolar Disorder
2007-09-30
Basically, Oprah had several guests on talking about bipolar disorder.Andrea, a housewife who killed her 6 year old son. Her friends also speak of her disorder which lead to the son's implusive and tragic death. She is serving a life sentence at this time.
Expert Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison spoke of the disorder and how it reeks havoc if not treated.
Soap Opera star Maurice Bedard (General Hospital, Sonny) spoke of his struggle with bipolar disorder and how medication helped him.
Jenifer Lewis, actress, spoke of her biopolar disorder and how medication is helping her. She mentioned that you need to tweak the meds to your proper level to feel comfortable
and that it took her almost a month to adjust and feel the change. The Dr. agreed with this statement.
Below are some other resources I found on the net describing/dealing with this malady which affects millions of people around the world. Hope this helps someone. Blessings.

Oprah: M. Gary Neuman - Divorce Expert
2007-09-30
This was an interesting show on how to handle telling your children that you and your spouse are divorcing. There is a right way to do it and a wrong way and you have 45 seconds to be direct with them according the divorce expert M. Gary Neuman, author of "Helping Your Kids Cope with Divorce the Sandcastles Way" (workbook for children also available).
The right way helps the child emotionally go through the process in a healthy and healing way.
The wrong way can create emotional troubles for the child as in the case presented of Ebony.
My heart just ached for the children who shared their stories and certainly helped so many other people in the process.

Hot Mulled Cider
2007-09-25
Crisp air, crunchy leaves, pumpkin harvest and Halloween!
This is so good on a cool fall day or Halloween celebration especially with plain or cinnamon donuts (try non-trans fat ones)!
Hot Mulled Cider
(mulled is to add spices then heat it)
Four servings with antioxidants (from the spices)
4 cups of apple cider
10 whole cloves
10 black peppercorns
4 strips of orange zest (3 inches by 1/2 inch)
1 cinnamon stick, cracked
1 vanilla bean, split
In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, bring all ingredients to a boil.
Remove from heat and let seep for 30 minutes.
Discard the spices (you can use a strainer)
Reheat till the mixture begins to steam.
Ladle into mugs; wait 3-5 minutes then serve.

I'm Back!
2007-09-25
Yes, and older but wiser since my birthday last week. LOL
It was a happy one.
The weather has been great, except the very chilly mornings but it heats up nicely.
My hydrangeas are beginning to wilt and look like little spinach trees.
Actually, I was busy at my other blogs tweaking, also tweaking other internet stuff. Gee, it keeps me busy.
I was also multitasking, on the internet, and doing laundry at the same time!
Doing laundry, helping with homework.
Doing laundry, while attending the open houses at school.
There seemed to be lots of laundry to do lately.
I wonder what a day without laundry would be like?
I think I will try that!

Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah 9.17
2007-09-17
Today's show was mostly to promote Dr. Oz's six part series on Discovery Health called "The Truth About Food".
Dr. Oz showed the little "pill cam".
He took it himself with a glass of water three hours previous to the show.
We all got to view his insides, the camera went from his stomach to his small intestine.
He said that this was a little miracle because now they can see deep inside the body and how our jejunum looks.
We saw his bile also.
They showed some segments from his new Discovery show.
1. Two British truck drivers get a high fiber diet makeover.
They ate lots of fast and packaged food while working. Both are constantly constipated.
They take a pill that needs to pass through their body and is timed how fast it comes out.
It takes more than a day for one guy to have a movement and the other guy it takes him 42 1/2 hours.
They are given a new high fiber diet and after one week, it takes half the time to have a movement and they get on a regular routine.
Fiber helps get rid of bile, sugar, and fat by pushing it out of your system.
Dr. Oz mentioned that Americans do not get enough natural fiber in their diets, typically less than 7 grams a day.
Daily fiber requirement for woman should be 25 grams and for men 35 grams.
(Beans, bran are sources as well as vegetables/fruits)
2. High Calcium Diets can help you lose weight.
If your poop floats, you have gotten rid of fat (pushed out) rather than it being absorbed.
If you have enough calcium in your diet, you can lose 6 1/2 pounds.
Calcium should be take with magnesium to avoid constipation.
Oprah asked if you eat healthy, then should you take a supplement. Dr. Oz said yes.
3. High blood pressure can take 10 years off your life.
A group of volunteers ate 11 lbs of raw fruits and vegetables for 12 days.
The plant fiber begins to work their natural magic and frequent trips to the bathroom are made.
At the end of the experiment these were the results:
cholesterol levels declined by 25% (drugs cannot do that!)
blood pressure declined by 10%
10 lbs of weight was lost
Count the nutrients than calories.
Oprah asked if they had salt, and the answer was no.
4. Skin Testing
Another lady had a skin test with ultra violet light to see how fast her skin would burn then ate a tablespoon of tomato paste every day for a set amount of time.
She was retested with the ultra violet light and there was 30% less damage to her skin.
Dr. Oz said that tomatoes are sun screen you can eat.
He also mentioned that wrinkles can be prevented from eating tomatoes.
5. Is water good for your skin?
A set of twins were used for this experiment.
Their skin was tested before the experiment began (moisture levels, elasticity, oil).
One drank water and the other did not over a period of time.
They were retested and the water drinking made no difference at all.
Drinking plenty of water can help lose weight but don't force fluids Dr. Oz said.
6. Stress -- an audience member asked if there were natural ways to control it. She was taking pills for it.
The experiment involved three London cab drivers and an actor who unknown to the drivers, would provide the stress on a fifteen minute ride.
Their heart rates were measured for a time and then they changed their diets to include many Omega 3 vitamins: oily fish, mackerel, tuna, haddock, salmon, etc.
After three months the results were:
22% reduction in cortisol, the stress chemical
12% reduction in other body stress chemicals
25% improvement in memory
Dr. Oz mentioned alternatives to Omega 3 fish: eggs, walnuts, black eyed peas
Dr. Oz said that Americans are always looking for cures (like the stress drugs) outside of making diet changes.
Oprah mentioned a book "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert to the audience member.
7. Do detox diets work?
Test -- 10 ladies divided into two groups. Each group was tested first.
One group could eat what they wanted.
The second group did the diet for detoxing.
After a week, they were retested and the results were that they all remained the same and there was no change/impact.
Dr. Oz mentioned that this could be considered a "jump start" or "rebooting" process before you go and change your diet or exercise routines.
Bob Greene
Mention of The Best Life system of grocery shopping.
Diet support system: low sugar, sodium, and high in fiber.
They visited the Lean Cuisine and Betty Crocker (100 brands/General Mills) test labs.
Bob mentioned that consumers can change the way the company creates a product by voicing their opinions as feedback.
Chef's create the real item. Then it is examined and worked on so that calories and fats are reduced and still tastes great. (I have a post, a review of the Lean Cuisine Panini.)
They have taste testers who must not wear perfumes, can drink no coffee before testing, and must drink carbonated water and eat crackers before testing.
One lady had lost a considerable amount of weight but needed to go a ways further however, could not devote one and a half hours of exercise like she use to.
Advice was to stay active, work out for long term success, and shorter but harder workouts.

Weekend Whimsies
2007-09-16
On Saturday it was overcast out and a tad drizzly so we went to a three yard sales in a neighborhood. My son was happy to get more Play Station 1 games -- hey, he still has fun with them. Priced 3 for a dollar and we got 10.
We also ended up at the swanky and tony grocery store and found a few Christmas presents so our normal goal of having all the shopping and cards done by Columbus Day is nearing.
Good news, off Craigslist, we found a sofa replacement located in the next town, cheap.
We vacuumed it, let it air in the garage, and today ( exceptional weather!) we used The Green Machine on it. It was pretty clean to begin with but heck, nice to have it cleaned for our use.
I have to say that The Green Machine is a great little device. This is the second one we have had.
The first one was huge and bulky, the first one ever built I think. This second one is smaller and easier to use. I think we paid $60. for it compared to the expensive first one. Worth the price.
And both nights, we went for a walk and spied on the neighbors. LOL
One neighbor has gotten a new vehicle.
Two of our other neighbors have cut down many trees and this has changed the landscape of the neighborhood.
I feel bad for the birds.
But not the squirrels, they can move elsewhere.

Oprah: Vera Wang and Julie Taymor
2007-09-14
WOW! Vera Wang is now designing and producing everyday fashionable wear for Kohl's Department Stores. Her line is called Simply Vera and is in stores this week. They had a fashion show and showed some very nice items for reasonable costs.
Then they showed some lovely gowns that were designed for Michelle Williams, Sandra Oh, and Kiera Knightly.
Also mentioned were the home items like bed linens and also pyjamas designed by Vera and in Kohl's also.
A few tips Vera mentioned as viewers were able to peek into her magnificent closet, set up like a shop!
1. She likes to wear a size larger for a more relaxed look.
2. Black looks good on anyone and can take 10 lbs off instantly.
3. Jewelry adds dimension and texture. The larger the piece, the less jewelry you wear.
Kohl's Department Store -- page says 30% off, you can shop online or shop the brick and motar store. Maybe if they don't have it at the store you still can get it online.
The second guest was Julie Taymor who put together The Lion King on stage.
Her latest project is the movie Across the Universe which is in limited release this weekend but will be in most movie theatres on 9/21. Thirty three Beatle songs are used to tell a surreal story.
When Paul McCarthy was screening the finished product with Julie, she asked him how he liked it and he said, "What's not to love?".

Jennie-O Lean Turkey Burgers
2007-09-08
Twelve quarter pound burgers to a package.Find them in the frozen meat section of your store.
Retails between $5.-6. (USA, east coast price). - a good buy, 70% less fat than a beef hamburger.
Each package has six - vacuumed sealed two pack burgers.
These are really quite tasty.
I served them grilled on a hamburger bun, with salad dressing, tomato, purple onions and lettuce.
Currently, we have purchased a third package.
If I bought 12 beef hamburgers, it would cost me, $12 for three- four packs.
I get 12 turkey burgers for half the cost so they are economical besides having less cholesterol.
Gobble gobble = yum yum.

Scribbles Update
2007-09-08
Just a note that I have added most of my blogging/help tutorials from The Inkblotter, my other site, here in the drop down box on the right. Why two blogs? -- well The Inkblotter was first but then I ended up beta testing here and like it BUT -- yes, there are some restrictions I am not too crazy about.
The Inkblotter's content: tblog help, poems, inspiration, fun links, recipes consumer news, money matters, games, quotes, songs, movie and book reviews, my stitchery/crafts . . .
Scribbles content: Oprah, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Wordless Wednesdays, POW Thursdays, some poems, recipes, mostly my life, product reviews, songs, commercials, TV . . .
Archives are monthly -- there are no categories or tag clouds at either place, the archives do not work here at Shoutpost. I am also unable to, for the past month, open any of my messages in my controls. No comments on posts by visitors, only in my chat box on the sidebar.
Both the above blogs are established and get plenty of hits (I am satisfied).
My newest blog Penny Lane -- has categories! -- memes, education, links, humor, Blog Talkers (reason why I had to get that blog for commenting), people, books and more. I also linked up the two above there, just for content. There is also a gallery (woo hoo) and I get pages and files! (yahoo!). ummm, there is a bandwidth issue there though but I am just testing and so far I LOVE IT! If you stop on by, sign the guestbook and leave your blog link!!! I have three comments there so far, only been there a week but I have gotten at least 100 hits a day and that is pretty good for a brand new blog! Right now, there are 32 posts (yeah in a week) so there is plenty to look at and laugh.
I blog in my sleep as I camp out next to the computer.
Anyone want a S"mores Bar cookie?

POW Thursday
2007-09-07
Well, a day late but still a post.
Yesterday I was dragging and did not feel so hot so blogging was not a priority and I had not surfed to find an inspiring blog or post for Post of the Week (POW) to inspire me.
Today however, I found BuckinJunction's blog about farm life and especially cows.
My Cow Story
Decades ago, the area we live in was mostly farm area.
Most of the farms have sold the land and I believe now, there are only a few working farms left.
One day, we are driving by a farm on our regular route and the cows are out in the field as usual.
As we were driving by, I noticed that the cows were all located near the fence, mooing really loudly in unison, and one cow was frantically pacing the fence.
Upon closer look, I saw what the cow's concern was.
Evidently, a calf had somehow gotten on the other side of the fence and could not get back into the cow field.
I told my husband to stop the car so we could rescue the calf.
The house was on the other side of the road so I just went to the door and knocked.
I told the man the situation.
He was glad I stopped and told him and took care of it.
So much for the "Tattle Tails", the cows at the fence mooing in unison but stressed out.
Today, the old barn still stands but all the cows are gone.
I miss them.

Kiva.org
2007-09-04
I mentioned this site in my other blog last year when I heard about it.Oprah mentioned it on her show today and said her staff is addicted to this site as well as many other people (like me!).
Kiva.org helps third world entreprenuers get small loans to start their businesses by your generosity and willingness to help others.
You select who you would like to help by reading profiles (, business, loan amount, repayment terms, loan use) and some other information
You donate as little money or as much money as you wish to one or a few people you would like to help.
The loans with interest will be paid back in time (depends on who needs what and for how long, so it varies from person to person).
When the loan/s are paid back, you can recycle your money and help someone else.
We do this with our yard sale profits and throw in some other money as well. It is nice to know you can make a difference in someone's life.
Why not try it yourself?
Kiva.org
Please note that due to the mention on Oprah's show, the site may be down due to overwhelming hits.

Weekend Whimsies
2007-09-02
September here already. My birthday is the 18th. If you are reading this, you are invited to my blog party. This weekend we did not go to any yard sales. Next weekend is the HUGE sale at the church in the next town. We go to that every year. It is their major fundraiser for social programs. The problem is finding a parking spot. We will try to find my husband a wallet, he needs a new one. LOL
Last night we walked downtown, a hike, and got ice cream at the small Mom and Pop coffee shop/bookstore.
The main road is shut off due to all the construction to fix the "basin" problem when the town gets flooded. Usually if you walk that road, cars drive fast and sometimes, to pass someone wanting to take a turn, people drive up on the sidewalk while people are walking it!!! I kid you not, I have almost been run over by these impatient idiots who do this on a blind spot to find people in front of them at the slight turn.
It was fun walking in the road and no traffic. There were a few dozen construction vehicles to admire. On the way back we walked the river back up to the main road, my husband had to use the portapotty on the road. My children were horrified!
Today we are going to the lake and the amusement park our annual trek.
I love the woody roller coaster. I feel so good after a good scream.
Free scream therapy for the price of a park ticket.
It will be good for me till next year.

Oreo Cakesters
2007-09-01
We broke down and bought two boxes as a treat on sale for $2.50 each. Here is my review, as small as the cakesters are.We got the regular white creme and a chocolate cream box.
There are six two packs in a box equalling twelve Cakesters.
I tried one -- three bites total, however, if your mouth is bigger or you have bad manners it may be two or one.
To be sure, I ate the second one, three bites again.
If you like Whoopie Pies -- you will like these as a quick bite.
The bad news is that two cakes equals 250 calories and 110 are from fat. YIKES!
And yes, Dr. Oz would not approve the ingredients since there are a few bad ones listed.
Product Details
Got to run and burn off the calories.
Additional note: I have seen in my search stats many people coming to this post about Jay Leno and Oreo Cakesters. I have been trying to find out exactly what this request is all about. When I do, I will add it to this post to satisfy all the curious people looking for that information. If you know any thing that would be helpful, post in my shoutbox on the sidebar. Thanks.
